The data on the laptop appears to be unencrypted and not tracking software was installed on the system, the only security measures mentioned was that it was password-protected and we all know that does nothing to protect the data on the devices.
@XmaC

Sounds like the VAIO BIOS is not configured to boot from CD-ROM by default. Boot into the BIOS (restart and hold F2) of the system and change the boot order so that the CD-ROM drive is booted first. Then retry ophcrack.

What is funny is most people don't set Administrative passwords during setup. You can boot the computer in safe mode and gain control as the Administrator. too much fun.

Yup!There is a technique to Crack BIOS passwords.

It may not work on some computers and it's called keystroke backdoor. It only bypasses the password check.

Press the following keys after pressing DEL or F2:

Ctrl+Shift+F8
Ctrl+Shift+F8
Backspace
Enter

In a situation like this it shows why it is good to set a BIOS and OS password, it would slow down an attacker who has limited access to a physical system.

The goal of this site is to show that once a laptop is stolen and a thief has physical access to a system, the data can easily be compromised.
