Wells Real Estate Funds Reports Laptop Theft with Critical Data

Wells Real Estate Funds has reported to their customers a laptop theft that occurred on October 6th. The letter was sent out to customers on November 5th. The data on the laptop appears to be unencrypted and not tracking software was installed on the system, the only security measures mentioned was that it was password-protected and we all know that does nothing to protect the data on the devices.

The information on the laptop had data on 704 customers which included the typical “steal my identity” information, with account numbers, Social Security Numbers, tax identification numbers and “specific investment” information.Throughout the report the kept repeating that they do no THINK the data has been compromised or that the thief knows the value of the data on it.
